Every aesthetic is a small philosophy. It tells us what its people find beautiful, what they're nostalgic for, what they want their lives to feel like. The internet, in the last decade, has become a kind of open-air museum of these philosophies. New ones bloom every season, mostly on Tumblr, then on Pinterest, then on TikTok, until they spill out into how real people dress, decorate, photograph, and live. What follows is a short cultural history of the ten aesthetics in this test. Where they come from, what they're a reaction against, and what they tell us about the way we're trying to feel right now.
